The idea I am about to share came to me after a successful fund raising event for the MS Society.

Just about all of you that are graduating from high school and planning to go to art school probably have a LOT of supporters. I'm not talking about strangers, I am talking about your six degrees of separation. Your friend's parents, your parent's friends, the guidance counselor that helped you apply to colleges, your art teachers, your neighbors, classmates, etc. These people know you or know of you and most likely also know that you are an artist.

When I graduated from high school, my friends and I had a big graduation party. At that party, I had an art show. Everything I had made, school assignment or not, was there. One of my neighbors bought something. I hadn't even planned to sell it.

You see where this is going, right?
When you apply to art school, you usually have to submit a portfolio. And the images have to be GOOD. So I know that you already have all of your art from high school photographed and saved somewhere, whether it is on a CD/DVD or slides (if you're old like me;).

As a general rule, the work that you created before going to college is not going to be nearly as great as the work you create during and after school. I'm not saying that to hurt your feelings, I'm telling you the truth. The work in your portfolio NOW is not going to get you jobs in 4 years. That's what I'm saying.

I'm also about to tell you this: that unless you have some uncanny attachment to your work (and understandably you might, since you created it), you should shed it. Or you COULD shed it.

Why not have an art show/sale? Call it a fundraiser. Invite everyone you know. It's a show, you are celebrating getting into (insert sweet acronym for art college here), and this is the work that got you there.

And put everything up for sale. Maybe you hold a silent auction, and people can bid on the pieces. Maybe you just ask for donations, and people give you what they can/think is acceptable. Maybe your guests won't see anything they like, but want you to make something totally new for them, now that they see how talented you are!

The possibilities are endless. It is a win-win situation.

If people buy your work, you can list on your resume that your work is already 'in the private collection of the so-and-so family', and that you have sold x pieces. No one needs to know that person was your gym teacher or the family you babysit for.

If people don't buy your work, you can save it, enjoy your time with it and try again later.

Don't underestimate your contacts. Most of them are really happy for you to be following something you love, and are glad to take a part in helping you achieve your dream.

Graphic Design, Illustration, Environmental Design and Architecture

Sorry for lumping these together, but a lot of organizations do that for some reason. A lot of companies, schools and organizations offer some form of tuition remission for dependents of their employees.

Definitely talk to your parents or guardians and ask them to find out if their employer offers any kind of post-secondary educational funding. A lot of the larger ones do!

A great example of this is John's Hopkins University, who offers various forms of tuition reimbursement to employees and their dependents.

Another example can be found in Unions. There are all kinds of them: teachers, steamfitters, you name it. And there are also organizations that unions belong to, like Union Plus, who happens to offer a Scholarship for students of working member families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education.

Disease and other health issues

These things happen. There is a lot of funding available at the national and down.

As you've probably guessed by now, searching for scholarships or grants related to a specific ailment is very much like searching for heritage and minority funding.

The thing that sets health issues apart from the other two is that in some cases, you don't have to be the disabled family member in order to receive funding from an organization. Some award scholarships and grants to children whose parents or siblings have (insert health problem here).

Make sure to search any national foundations, but also look into your local chapters, clubs and support groups to see if they offer funding that may not be available at the national level. Some ailments have more funding nationwide than others. Some are only funded by organizations at the state level. It is up to you to do the necessary searching.

*
There are also scholarships and funding available to children/students whose parents were harmed in terrorist attacks (such as 9/11) or are involved in the military. But that's another post, completely.

Some of the major scholarships I have found on the topic of disease/physical ailments are:

Lupus Inspiration Foundation for Excellence

Spina Bifida Association Scholarship Program

American Federation for the Blind

*
Interesting note:
If you end up doing a search for 'Color Blindness', you will come across scholarships that deal with topics like race relations. I have yet to find a scholarship for Color-Blindness because of this.

Minority Scholarships

There are so many of them.

I am not going to post everything that I have found here, because I will then feel the need to seek out every possible award for any minority that may apply. I might never finish in that case!

I will however, post a few sites that I believe cover the wide range of Under-Represented Minorities. And I will continue to post them as I find them:)

Searching for minority scholarships is very similar to searching heritage and state funding. Start with a keyword that describes the minority you are searching (ex: hispanic, latino, african american, glbt, feminist, (any kind of religion) etc), then do a search for that PLUS the words 'scholarship', 'grant', 'award', etc.

Please note:
Be prepared: when searching for Minority scholarships, like anything else, you will find things that you don't want to read during your search. I am talking about anti-minority (or 'hate') websites. Please just move along to the next search result and try not to be upset.

When it comes to active minority scholarships, you will most likely need to write essays or contribute some form of 'proof' for your application. I had a student complain to me recently that she wasn't 'gay enough' or 'active enough' in her race's political organizations to win some awards. While this may not always be the case, be aware of that. It never hurts to be too prepared for your applications:)

So, here are some of the better scholarships I have come across:

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Straightforward Media

The Point Foundation

So you want to study abroad?

It is always a good idea to try out a different college (or country) while you still can:) It gets really difficult to travel for your art after you graduate and join the workforce. I highly suggest it.

It is imperative that you are up to date on all shots and vaccinations, and also make sure to get your passport renewed WAY before it is time for you to travel across the borders. The typical wait time for passport renewal lately has been as long as 2 months.

Here are a few programs to make the most of your college travels:

Fulbright Program for US Students. Open to High School, College and Graduate degree program graduates.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA). This one is self-explanatory. As usual, make sure to read the guidelines and requirements.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
The above link goes to the application page. To learn more about the scholarship itself, go HERE.

IES Abroad
Offers study-abroad programs and their own scholarships as well.

IEFA: International Education Financial Aid
Offers study-abroad scholarships in many different fields of study.

World Learning SIT Study Abroad
World Learning is a global non-profit organization with operations in more than 75 countries. You must be prepared to submit samples of your work and/or write about it.

Make sure you have decent digital images that have been color-corrected and saved at at LEAST 150dpi, full-size. This will allow for easy viewing and printing of your work by the judging panels. Make sure you have a JPG or TIFF version of each, along with a possible PDF for the internet-disinclined.

2. It is best to use the appropriate keywords while using a search engine. Searching using only the word 'scholarship' after your type of art will bring up mostly descriptions of scholarships that are offered by specific colleges to their students.

To start, choose a search keyword that describes the type of art you make. Examples of this could be 'graphic design', 'illustration', 'interdisciplinary sculpture', 'fiber arts', etc. If you consider yourself more than one 'style' of artist (and really, who doesn't? I myself am a Graphic Designer, Photographer and digital artist that likes to draw), you will end up doing more than one search.

After you've decided on the art-keyword to use, begin your search by entering that word into the search field, along keywords such as 'competition', 'student', etc. Other helpful keywords to try in any combination are 'scholarship', 'grant', 'contest' and 'award'.

By using the words 'student' and 'competition' together, you are searching for scholarships, grants, awards that are offered to winners of student art competitions.

3. Don't forget in your searches to keep an eye on your favorite arts publications and websites. Many of them offer student contests on a yearly basis. Winning, high placement or honorable mentions will usually get you some kind of mention in the winners issue!

4. Pay attention to your local art scene and the community around the school you are attending/applying to.
Many cities have more art fairs and similar events than you could ever go to. For this reason, it is a good idea to perform a city search to find out what the local offerings are. Many arts fairs don't require the exhibitors to be local. There are usually open submissions for different themes that may be involved. There are also usually monetary prizes. Don't overlook your local Farm Fair!! There is always an arts contest!

While these prizes aren't necessarily 'scholarships', they are money that you can put towards funding your education. Not to mention: even if you only submit your work to local galleries, there is the opportunity to market and sell your work, therefore gaining recognition. No publicity is ever bad publicity, right?

International students: (also relevant: general scholarships)

This information is courtesy of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (www.maldef.org)

The majority of scholarships listed below do not require a social security number, legal residency or citizenship in order to apply. They can be found on your state's office of Higher Education website.

Example: Maryland's office is the MD Higher Education Commission, and can be found at: www.mhec.state.md.us.

If you are unsure of your state's offerings, or how to find the state website, perform a Google keyword search for "Your State" + "Higher Education". The correct office should be in the top results. Make sure that ".gov" is somewhere in the web address, as these are usually the government-approved sites.

Please note:
Many states only offer funding to students who stay and pursue a post-secondary education in-state. While this is not always the case, it is helpful to read the regulations and guidelines before applying.

State funding is usually not arts-based, it is just general funding for state residents.

There are a few higher-level organizations that cater specifically to artists. They are:
National Assembly of State Arts Agencies,
National Endowment for the Arts and
U.S. Regional Arts Organizations

Make sure to look up all of the art clubs and societies that exist in the state in which you reside or are planning to go to school in. A good deal of the smaller organizations (and even the state-funded arts organizations) usually have competitions, shows and a scholarship or grant offering.

Even if you can't win a scholarship or grant from smaller groups, you can compete and win in art shows, which will also win you money and local recognition. So its not a scholarship you've won, you can still put it towards your education!! You might also have a chance to sell your work to people that saw you in the show. Don't look past the small groups. They pile up fast.

Look at your state or county fair for examples of local art competitions NOT handled by an art organization.

Not even arts-related, but here they are:)

Some scholarships are just open to anyone that feels like applying, as long as they are in, or about to be enrolled in, a degree program of some sort. The key to finding them is knowing where to look.

Because there are entirely too many to list, I will tell you how to search for them.

While some scholarships are nation-wide, most of them are given by local chapters of smaller organizations to residents of their county/state who fit their pre-defined criteria. Many of them are not concerned with your major or course of study, because they are awarding you based on your heritage alone.

First, do a search for the organizations. The best way to do this is to use a search engine (I use Google only) and type: "(your heritage here)-American" organization. This will yield a very long list of results.

From there, look into the larger ones (they usually have words like 'National' or 'Foundation' in the name somewhere), and see if they are offering any scholarships or awards to student.

Some examples of a National Heritage organization are the NIAF: National Italian American Foundation and the HSF: Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Both offer some very competitive scholarships.

After that, do a more localized search. Type the same words from above, but add your state or city to the keywords as well. An example of this would be: "Hispanic-American, organization, heritage, scholarship, Denver, CO".

You would do well to try many different combinations of keywords while searching. We'll use Polish-American as the example:
~Polish-American scholarship
~Polish-American grant
~Polish-American Organization
~Polish-American Award Competition
~Polish-American college award
~National Polish-American
...etc.

*******
Please note that adding an 's' to the words 'scholarship' and 'grant' will yield different results than what you may be looking for. Searching 'scholarshipS' vs. 'scholarship' will pull search engines with results rather than INDIVIDUAL scholarship listings. The same goes for the words 'grant' and 'organization'.

It is also important to note that if you are part American-Indian or -Eskimo, many heritage foundations will want to see proof. This could come in the form of letters, photos and possibly a tribal certification, if you have one. If you don't have a tribe certificate, please look into getting one as it will make your application for these types of scholarships/grants go much more smoothly.

Multi-Discipline: Art Scholarships, Grants and Competitions

Scholarships/Grants:

Competitions:
AIGA Worldstudio Scholarship Competition, yearly. I spend a lot of time searching online for private scholarships not offered through my school for students.

I come across many scholarships during my searches that are not applicable to my students. I understand how difficult searching for the ones that apply only to artists can be, so I will post them here for art students nationwide. I am fed up with the likes of sites similar to Fastweb that have an ad/subscription page in between each page of your search survey and mediocre search results.

Students need to be able to go to one place, see their options, and act accordingly.

Most first-time college students and their parents don't know where to begin when searching for money that is not doled out from the US Government or the college they are planning to attend.

Please note that I will also include in my listings places to find scholarships that apply to everyone.

This weblog will evolve as I find more scholarships, but I intend to keep it well-manicured and easy to search.

With regards to Heritage-based scholarships, I will only post the ones that are available at the national level, and nothing smaller. There are too many smaller, community organizations that exist to record and organize them all.

For starters, know this: each student is unique.
All of the things you experience, do, collect, read and write make you who you are. There are scholarships out there for EVERYTHING: Equestrians, Skateboarders, children of divorced parents, kids with odd first names, etc. Don't even get me started on disease: there are more untapped resources for students with diseases, or that are children of parents with diseases than anyone could imagine.

For every consideration that I can think of I will have a separate post dedicated to it with a brief description of what will be found below. This will enable easy searches, and make it easier to answer any questions that might arise. Feel free to comment or message me with questions or concerns.

DISCLAIMER:
USING THIS SITE OR THE LINKS CONTAINED WITHIN DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU FREE MONEY, MORE SCHOLARSHIPS, ETC. THIS SITE IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY COLLEGE OR STATE. THE WRITER OF THIS WEBLOG ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS YOU DO OR DO NOT RECEIVE.

Thanks for reading:)
